The room curves, the rug does not: what 370 hotels say about the floor of 2027
ligea has read the floors of 370 hotels and hotel projects, from projects still in planning to hotels that opened in 2025 and 2026. Terracotta is the accent of the moment, dark rooms are back, green stays on the walls, and the carpet in most new hotels is a rug laid on wood or stone.
Karlsruhe, 6 October 2026. ligea, the Karlsruhe company that designs and supplies bespoke carpets and rugs for hotels, publishes its report "Hospitality carpet trends 2027". The team went through the interiors of 370 hotels and hotel projects one by one, from quiet luxury to economy and from the lobby to the ballroom, and looked at what lies on the floor, which colours carry the room and where the pattern sits.
What the rooms show
- The room curves, the rug mostly does not. Curved sofas, round tables and arches shape about one in three interiors, yet only about one in seven rugs is round or free-form.
- Terracotta and rust are the accent of the moment. They show in about one in five interiors, and in about one in three of the upscale hotels that opened in 2025 and 2026.
- Green stays on the walls. Olive, sage and bottle green appear on walls, velvet and stone, but hardly reach the floor. Underfoot the calm base stays sand, taupe and warm brown.
- Dark rooms are back. About one interior in six is dark, led by the bar in walnut and brass. In the hotels that opened in 2025 and 2026 it is one in four.
- The carpet is mostly a rug. Where the floor can be seen, a rug on wood, stone or terrazzo is about four times as common as wall-to-wall carpet, and about four in five lobbies and lounges have one.
- Where there is a carpet, it usually carries pattern. Upscale hotels keep the guest room calm and put the pattern in the lobby and the bar; midscale, lifestyle and economy hotels pattern the guest room as well. Only the quiet luxury look keeps the floor mostly plain.
- Geometry leads the patterns. Chequerboards, grids and stepped fields come first; botanical motifs are rare on the floor.
- Ballrooms and meeting rooms still belong to wall-to-wall carpet, almost all of it patterned, mostly as a large, free abstract drawing in calm colours.
"We put nearly nine hundred room pictures next to each other, and the floor was almost always the last thing to change. The sofa is round, the wall is green, and the rug underneath is still rectangular and sand coloured. I expect that to change with the next renovations," says Denis Türker, CEO of ligea.
The report sorts the rooms into ten design languages, follows eight trends onto the floor and turns them into a colour palette for 2027 with notes on specification for lobbies, bars, guest rooms, corridors and ballrooms. It is free to read at Hospitality carpet trends 2027. Editors receive the full report as a PDF on request or through the link in this email; images in print resolution are at www.ligea.com/press.
How the report was made: the sample combines hotel projects in planning, construction or renovation with hotels that opened in 2025 and 2026 or open by 2027, in groups from quiet luxury to economy and select service, plus corridors, ballrooms and meeting space. ligea looked at every interior itself, judged floor type, pattern and shape by eye with the same criteria for every group, and read the colours from the pictures. Colours read from pictures show a direction, not a binding colour standard. The sample follows what is visible in trade media and project announcements and leans towards upscale and luxury hotels.
